19 Essential Items That Should Be in Your RV Toolbox

In all of our camping adventures, we have learned, and now advise, that you travel with a toolkit dedicated to the camper. Since space is limited, you must carry only essential equipment. Experience has taught us that a dedicated toolbox for the camper is necessary compared to sharing one between the RV and the home. Sharing items in two locations ultimately leads to leaving things at home that you will need while traveling.

The following are Campers and Campfires top 19 items that should be included in all camper toolboxes:

A fuse kit (Check it out on Amazon) is a must-have for the camper. The kit does not have to be large, but rather it should include a variety of fuses. Theses kits are handy just in case you blow a fuse while camping. We have experienced blown fuses over the years, and what could have turned ugly was a simple fix with a fuse kit.

We use a screwdriver bit set (Check it out on Amazon) with a driver and bits to ensure that we have the screwdrivers that we need when the time arises. Having a variety of screwdrivers has been helpful. We have had to make many repairs while on the road, from fixing simple doorknobs to the air conditioner.

You will need an assortment of wrenches (Check it Out on Amazon) for many tasks. Depending upon the hitch that you have, you may need to tighten the hitch ball or adjust the brackets. You can purchase a large wrench made specifically for tightening your hitch ball. The long length is particularly handy because it provides a great deal of needed leverage.

A small electric multimeter (Check it out on Amazon) is handy for troubleshooting your electrical components. It is convenient to have a pair of wire strippers with a wire cutter and some electrical connectors as well.

You will most certainly need a knife. Campers and Campfires recommends keeping a pocketknife handy as well as a pocket multi-tool. A multi-tool (Check it out on Amazon) allows you to keep numerous items close by at all times. We keep a multi-tool in one of our camper drawers.

A portable electric drill (Check it out on Amazon) is handy, along with a set of drill bits. If you have manual stabilizing jacks, you can use a cordless drill along with a ¾ socket to raise and lower the stabilizer jacks, eliminating the need to turn them manually.

Some epoxy or gorilla glue (Check it out on Amazon) is always handy to have around. It seems that we are always in need of some epoxy for one quick repair or another.

We always need extra water hose washers (Check them out on Amazon). These are cheap and handy to have. You will be surprised how many times that the washer in our hose has fallen out when we were transporting it to and from a campsite.

Campers and Campfires recommends several small tools that you will need. You should carry basic tools such as a hammer, pliers, and a pair of needle-nose. These are versatile items that are handy to have when the need arises.

A 12-ton bottle jack (Check it out on Amazon) does not take up much room, and you will not regret having it if you should ever get a flat tire. Make sure you have the correct tire iron to change the tire as well.

A portable air compressor (Check it out on Amazon) is helpful, especially if you go on trips that last for more than a week. Correct tire pressure is essential for safe travels. The compressor can also be used for floats, balls, and other inflatables you may use on your trips.

A level (Check it out on Amazon) is an essential piece of equipment for your camper toolbox. We use a level to ensure that our camper is level. A level camper is a must for safety and comfort. A pair of knee pads (Check them out on Amazon) are handy to have in your toolbox. It seems like there are always jobs that require you to get down on your knees to complete, and this can be painful, especially if you are parked on a gravel site. Knee pads can make these jobs more comfortable.

If you love sitting by the campfire, then a hatchet (Check it out on Amazon) is a must to split wood. We would recommend using this in tandem with a small 4-pound sledge-hammer (Check it out on Amazon), which makes splitting wood easier.

A Kindling Cracker (Check it out on Amazon) makes splitting wood easier and safer. The Kindling Cracker was developed by a girl in New Zealand as a science fair project and is now sold all over the world. The Kindling Cracker is one of our favorite camping tools.

Campers and Campfires would also recommend a tube of self-leveling lap sealant (Check it out on Amazon) that is compatible with your roof. Be sure to check your manual and determine what type of roof that you have so that the lap-sealant is compatible with your roof type.

We also recommend that you have some Eternabond Tape (Check it out on Amazon) with you. It can help with a quick roof repair on the road. Eternabond can seal up a small rip or tear in your roof so that your vacation is not ruined.

Depending on the type of hitch hook up that you have, carry extra cotter pins (Check them out on Amazon) and L-brackets. Make sure that you get pins and/or brackets that are compatible with your hitch. These are inexpensive and easy to carry since they do not take up much room. Cotter pins are easy to lose. I was also able to help out a fellow camper who had lost his cotter pin and was not able to set up his weight distribution hitch without it.

A Sharkbite slip coupling (Check it out on Amazon) can be used to avoid a plumbing emergency. It is hard to carry everything you might need in the case of plumbing problems. However, a Sharbite coupling will allow you to repair a broken hose or a small hole in your pipe. Be sure to get the correct size coupling to match the pipe size in your camper. You will probably need a pipe cutter as well.

Finally, a little duct tape (Check it out on Amazon) can go a long way. You never know when you might need it!
