Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground
We recently visited Sunset Bay RV Resort while vacationing in Michigan. Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground is located in Allouez, Michigan. Allouez is on the northern tip of the upper peninsula, near Copper Harbor. Sunset Bay sits on beautiful Lake Superior, and it is the perfect location to view breathtaking sunsets.

Amenities at Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground
Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground is located on Lake Superior and advertises a beach area. However, it has a very rocky shoreline making it challenging to access the water.

Favorite Sites Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground
We stayed in site 14, and it was our favorite RV site. It is a long back-in site that is pretty level with a great view. Unfortunately, some of the utilities are shared, so our electric hookup was on the wrong side of the camper. We used an extension cord to reach the electric connection. Tent sites 1-11 back up to Lake Superior. Sites 8 and 10 were a little more private and were some of our favorites for that reason.

Description of Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground

Sunset Bay’s tent sites and the front-row RV sites 12-19 all have spectacular views of the lake. The campground itself is somewhat haphazardly laid out as they have attempted to disturb as little of the natural beauty as possible. Mostly, they put out water and electric hookups with some gravel and called it a campground. Site 14 was great, and I would return if we could get that site again.
If you stay here, bring an RV extension cord (Check it out on Amazon). The utilities are shared, and our electric box was about 40 feet from the camper on the wrong side. Fortunately, I had an extension cord that I had purchased years ago and never used until this campground.
Sunset Bay is advertised as a resort, but there are no amenities outside the beautiful views. The newer section, sites 36-41, are long pull-through sites with full hookups, but you lose the view. The firepits at each campsite are made out of rocks from Lake Superior. There are also several cabins available for rent. As the name suggests, it is a beautiful place to sit and watch the sunset.
There were many mosquitoes at Sunset Bay, so come prepared with bug spray and Thermacell (Read our article on controlling mosquitoes while you are camping). We passed a large sign about mosquitos on our way to the campground. We laughed at it, but it was actually a true warning. We saw citizens in Copper Harbor wearing hats with mosquito nets (check them out on Amazon) built in, and we all wished we had one. Brandi would not leave the camper without the Thermacell (check it out on Amazon) in hand.

Hookups at Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground
Most Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground campsites have 30 amp electric and water. There is a new section that is not on the lake that has sewer hookups as well. There are also tent sites with water hookups only.

Activities Near the Campground
We visited the Keweenaw National Historic Site in Calumet while in the area. Years ago, copper mining composed the economy of the peninsula. The visitor center in Calumet tells the miners’ story, and there are several satellite heritage locations in the region that you can visit as well. Among the heritage sites is the Quincy Mine.
We also drove along the lakeshore to Copper Harbor. It is a beautiful drive, and there are several places along the way you can stop and take in the spectacular views. You can get out and swim in a few small beach areas. You can also take a ferry from Copper Harbor to the Isle Royale National Park.

Sunset Bay was absolutely beautiful and slightly interesting. We will return, but we will be better prepared on our next visit.
