Favorite Sites at Fort McAllister
Sites 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 11 are all pull-through sites located on the marsh. We stayed in site 2; it was a good site, and we would stay there again. Site 8 was our favorite. This site is slightly larger than others and has plenty of shade, which is needed, especially in the Georgia summer.

Description of Fort McAllister State Park Campground
This was our first visit to Fort McAllister, and it quickly became one of our favorites. The campground is on an island, Savage Island, surrounded by marsh. Many of the sites at the campground are all full hookups and located on the marsh. All the sites are beautiful, as the campground is full of live oaks covered in Spanish Moss, providing plenty of shade. Like most state parks, the campsites are large, and you have plenty of room between them. In addition to the 67 campsites, there are seven cottages at Fort McAllister State Park. The wildlife, especially the deer, is abundant on Savage Island.

Hookups at Fort McAllister
Campsites 1-18 at Fort McAllister State Park are full hookups. The rest of the sites are water/electric only. Electric is both 30/50 amps.

Tips for Fort McAllister
The deer come out just before dusk and will walk up to your camper.

You are on the Georgia coast, so expect to be bothered by insects, especially if you visit during summer. Please read our article on mosquitoes to help control insects at your campsite.
A camping gazebo (read our article on camping gazebos) is an excellent way to keep bugs away.
Things To Do Near Fort McAllister State Park Campground
We like to visit historical sites anywhere we camp, and there are several great historical sites near Fort McAllister State Park.
Fort McAllister is an earthen fort on the same property as the campground. Fort McAllister was a Civil War fort captured by General Sherman at the end of his march to the sea. In addition to the fort, there is a Civil War museum and film. The fort is considered a Georgia State Historic Site, and there is a separate fee to visit, but it is well worth it. Since we love the state’s historic sites, it is economical for us to purchase a Georgia State Historic Site Pass. A family pass currently sells for $50 and allows a family of four to gain entry into all of Georgia’s state historical sites.

Henry Ford used to have a winter home in Richmond Hill. His home was over 7,000 square feet and sat on 55 acres. The home is privately owned and not open to the public. However, you can learn much about Ford’s contributions to the town at the Richmond Hill History Museum.

We also visited Wormsloe State Historic Site in nearby Savannah. The road leading to Wormsloe is a beautiful, iconic oak-lined street. Wormloe was the home of Noble Jones, who arrived in Georgia with James Oglethorpe in 1733. The tabby ruins of his estate are the oldest standing structure in the state of Georgia.

Sapelo Island is less than an hour away. The island is one of the best places we have visited on the Georgia coast. Sapelo is only accessible by ferry or boat. It is home to the Hog Hammock community, which currently has a population of less than 50. The Gullah-Geechee people that live in Hog Hammock are descendants of enslaved people from the West Indies. The Department Of Natural Resources manages the island, and tours of Sapelo Island are available, but dates are limited, so be sure to make a reservation.

Fort McAllister State Park is only 30 miles from Savannah (read our article about visiting Savannah).
Favorite Restaurants Near Fort McAllister
There are several good places to eat in Richmond Hill.
Our favorite place to grab a bite was Molly McPherson’s Scottish Pub and Grill. We ate here twice because everything we ate was delicious the first time we visited. The menu is full of dishes with a Scottish flair. Two of our favorites were the shepherd’s pie and fish and chips.

Fish Tales is only a couple miles from the campground. Fish Tales serves fresh seafood on the banks of the Ogeechee River.
We loved our visit to Fort McAllister. The park is quiet and beautiful. We loved the wildlife. Savannah is only 30 miles away, and after a day in Savannah, you can escape back to the peace and serenity of Savage Island for some rest and relaxation.
