Amenities at Pikeville RV Park

Pikeville RV Park has several amenities. A clean bathhouse with a shower, a soccer field, and a handicap-accessible playground are all located at the RV Park. Pickleball courts and a basketball court are located across the street. In addition, there is a dog park about a quarter mile down the road with a sidewalk from the RV park to the dog park.

Favorite Sites at Pikeville RV Park

All of the sites at Pikeville RV Park are pretty similar. Our favorite site was number 13 because it has an open side with a little more room. Site 13 is also close to the restrooms and the playground.

Description of Pikeville RV Park

Pikeville RV Park is one of the most unique campgrounds we have ever visited. The city of Pikeville runs it, and there is no one on-site. When you arrive, there is a gate that you can access by entering the code provided in your confirmation email. If you do not have the code, there is a sign to call the police department to obtain the code.

Twenty full hookup sites are spaced nicely in a circle. All of the sites have level concrete pads. The park is well-maintained. There are a few small trees, but they are too small to provide shade. Pikeville RV Park was a good campground for a short two-night stay while we were sightseeing in the Pikeville area.

Things To Do Near Pikeville RV Park

Pike County, Kentucky, borders West Virginia and is most famous for the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys. We recommend visiting the Pike County Tourism and Convention and Visitors Bureau first. Then, pick up a brochure with driving tours of the feud sites. There are two primary driving tours. The first tour is in Pikeville and includes one of Randall McCoy’s homes and gravesite.

The second tour is a little longer and takes you to several feud sites throughout the county, with a dip into West Virginia for a few more markers. Most of the sites are marked with monuments explaining their significance.

Houses have been built on Randall McCoy’s homestead, but you can stop by the well on the property. In addition, you can visit the location of Reverend Anse Hatfield’s Cabin, where the Hog Trial took place. The original cabin is no longer standing, but a replica has been built. The Hog Trial Cabin is also where Anse Hatfield’s brother Ellison was shot. These are just a few of the sites on the feud tour.

If you have not already seen the mini-series (check it out on Amazon) starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton, we recommend watching it before visiting the area. Watching the mini-series will provide the needed context for visiting the sites.

While at the visitor’s center, get directions to Butcher Holler, the family homestead where Loretta Lynn grew up. Crystal Gayle was born in Butcher Holler. The visitor center will guide you to Webb’s Store, and it is a short drive to Loretta Lynn’s home from there. There is limited parking, and the house is small with a few rooms, but well worth visiting to learn about Loretta Lynn’s humble beginnings. We recommend you watch Coal Miner’s Daughter (Check it out on Amazon) before visiting the cabin if you have not already seen it.

The Pikeville RV Park suited our family perfectly as we explored the mountains and hollers of Eastern Kentucky, witnessing the true beauty of Appalachia.
