Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground
Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground is located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in Rodanthe (pronounced Row-dan-thee). It is positioned on a beautiful strip of North Carolina Highway 12.
Amenities at Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground
Camp Hatteras has many amenities that make it an excellent place for families to visit. In addition to the beach, there are heated indoor and outdoor pools and a jacuzzi. We visited the Outer Banks in February and enjoyed using the heated indoor pool and hot tub. In addition, Camp Hatteras has miniature golf, a playground, shuffleboard, a dog park, basketball courts, and tennis courts with pickleball boundaries. The campground has all the equipment to play any of these activities, so you do not need to pack your own.
Camp Hatteras has WiFi throughout the park. The internet is limited for basic usage, so it is not suited for steaming, which is common and not a problem when we travel (Read our article on the best ways to access the internet while camping). In addition, five bathhouses and four laundromats are spread throughout the campground.
Favorite Sites at Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground
Camp Hatteras has a variety of sites, including ocean and sound front sites. Our favorites were the sound front sites located directly on Pamlico Sound.
We stayed in one of the oceanfront sites, which was also excellent. You have easy access to the beach. However, the dunes are between you and the ocean, so you cannot see the sea from your site. You can hear the ocean, though, which was pleasant and relaxing, especially at bedtime.
Description of Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground
Camp Hatteras is a large campground stretching from the Pamlico Sound on one end to the Atlantic Ocean on the other. There are sites located on both sides of North Carolina Highway 12. The campground is wide open with no trees, which is typical for the entire area. We visited in February, but I imagine it gets pretty hot during the summer because there is no shade. However, while we were visiting, there was a constant breeze every day, which helps with the heat. If you plan to visit during the summer, (check out our article on How to Keep Cool While Camping).

The campsites at Camp Hatteras are full hookup sites, including 30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, and cable tv.

Tips for Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground
When traveling in the Outer Banks, give yourself plenty of time to get from one place to another. Highway 12 is the main and only road in many areas, so traffic will crawl if there is any congestion.
Things To Do Near Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground
There is a lot to do near Camp Hatteras, and most attractions are inexpensive.
One of our favorite activities was driving on the beach to see the wild horses in Corolla. Driving on the beach is allowed in Corolla if you have a 4×4 and follow the guidelines to avoid getting stuck. We visited in February, and there was no cost or restrictions. However, during the busy season, you must plan ahead and purchase a pass. Wild horses live on the beach in Corolla. The horses are Spanish Mustangs initially brought to the area by Spanish explorers. They are now extinct throughout the world except Corolla.
We drove up the beach and did not initially see any horses. However, we went through where some of the homes were located and saw several horses in that area. There is an entire community over the dunes opposite the ocean. It was remarkable to see, especially knowing you must travel on the beach to get anywhere and you are at the mercy of the tide.
We visit historical sites wherever we go, and there are several excellent ones in the area. The Wright Brothers Monument in Kill Devil Hills is a must-see. While the Wright Brothers were from Dayton, Ohio, they came to the Kill Devil Hills area to fly their first plane because of the optimal conditions and the wind, which blows constantly. The museum and grounds are built where the first flight took place. Interpretive tours occur throughout the day, and we recommend you take a tour to hear the story of the first flight. There is a beautiful museum on the grounds as well.
The Wright Brothers Memorial is part of the National Park System, and there is a minimal cost for those over 16. However, we recommend purchasing an America the Beautiful Pass for $80 per year, which covers the entrance fees at National Park System locations throughout the United States.
In addition to the Wright Brothers Memorial, there are two other locations in the Outer Banks that are part of the National Park Service- Fort Raleigh and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. There is no cost to visit either of these locations.
Fort Raleigh was an excellent stop and is the Lost Colony of Roanoke site. In addition, the Bodie and Cape Hatteras Lighthouses are located within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Since it was the offseason on our visit, some attractions, including the Lost Colony Play and the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site and Museum, were closed.
Favorite Restaurants Near Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground
We ate lots of great seafood while we were visiting the Outer Banks. Our favorite restaurant was O’Neals Sea Harvest, located in Wanchese. O’Neals is both a restaurant and a seafood market. They are only open for lunch and close at 3:00. After lunch, pick up some fresh seafood to cook back at the campground. We ate fried shrimp, red drum, and soft crab, which were delicious.
We also ate at the Kill Devil Grill in Kill Devil Hills. Kill Devil Hills is a diner near the beach and the Wright Brothers Memorial. Everything we ate at the Kill Devil Grill was excellent. There were six of us, and a couple of us ate burgers while others ate seafood. Their desserts were a highlight, especially the apple crisp.
We would recommend the oysters at Blue Water Grill and Raw Bar. Blue Water had several types of oysters, and they let us mix and match a dozen to try all of them. Brandi is a raw oyster connoisseur who loves trying different local varieties.
Waves Coffees and Candy Shop is less than a mile from the campground. We rode our bikes to Waves a few mornings for coffee and pastries. My daughter loved their specialty coffee, Nights of Rodanthe, named after the Nicholas Sparks book (check out the house in the area too). In the same complex as Waves was a fantastic beach shop, Kitty Hawk Surf Company, where you can buy popular products from companies such as Olukai and Life is Good at great prices.
We truly loved our visit to the Outer Banks, as it is one of the most unique places we have visited. Being on such a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound makes you feel like you are on the edge of the earth. We hope you get to visit that fantastic strip soon.
