We recently visited Old Fort Archaeological State Park located in Manchester, Tennessee. Manchester is located about an hour south of Nashville and thirty minutes north of Monteagle.

There is a small camp store that sells firewood. Many sites have an additional tent pad. The state park has many hiking trails and fishing areas.

Favorite Sites at Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park Campground

Our favorite sites at the campground are 33 and 32. Both sites are large and have an additional tent pad. Like all of the sites at Old Stone Fort, there is plenty of shade. Both sites sit on a bluff above the river. Site 33 has a large side yard for your enjoyment.

Description of Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park Campground

Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park Campground is precisely what a state park campground should be. No frills, but lots of nature. This campground has many trees; it looks like they only cleared enough trees to put in campsites and the campground roads. A few of the sites sit on the bluff above the river. All of the sites are shaded. The roadways are narrow, but they can be easily navigated.

Things To Do Near Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park Campground

The Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park Campground is just a few miles from Great Stage Park, home of the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Bonnaroo is one of the largest music festivals in the world, and the campground is the perfect place to stay if you plan to attend this event.

The Caverns music venue is only 30 minutes away. The Caverns is a unique venue located in a cave. We saw a concert at The Caverns, and it was terrific. The acoustics were excellent. We also did the cave tour at The Caverns. On the tour, you visit the music venue and another cave on the premises.

The park has several walking trails. Native Americans built the Old Stone Fort over 1,500 years ago, and the main walking trail allows you to explore the remains of the original fort. An earthen wall used to be a sacred gathering place for the Native Americans.

Sewanee, Tennessee, is only about thirty minutes away. We recommend taking a short trip to The University of the South, one of the most beautiful college campuses we have ever visited. A segment of the Trail of Tears is also close by.

Stones River National Battlefield is in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, less than 45 minutes from the campground. Stones River was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

The sights and sounds of Nashville are only an hour away if you want to make a day trip to the home of country music. In Nashville, we recommend taking a tour of the Ryman Auditorium. The Ryman was home to the Grand Ole Opry for over 30 years. The Country Music Hall of Fame is also located in Nashville.

For history buffs, Andrew Jackson’s home, The Hermitage, is about 45 minutes away.

Old Stone Fort Archeological Park Campground is central to many attractions, yet you are nestled amidst a beautiful, shaded forest. It is a fantastic place to camp!
