Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground
We recently visited Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground, located at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The resort has vast amenities, beautiful campsites, and an array of cabins, perfect for any lodging needs while vacationing at Disney.
Amenities at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
Fort Wilderness is on another level when it comes to campground amenities. There are two different pools in the campground. One pool has a giant corkscrew waterslide, while the other is designated as a quiet pool for those looking to relax. There is a whirlpool spa located at both pools.

Golf carts are available for rent and can assist you in traveling around such a large campground. However, if you are not in a hurry, the buses running throughout the campground will take you to any location within the campground. We never waited more than about 10 minutes for a bus. The buses will also take you to any of the Disney Parks. In addition to the buses, boat transportation is available to the Magic Kingdom.
There is a dog park where you can let your dogs exercise. Kennels are also available to board your pet while visiting the theme parks.
The Meadow’s Trading Post is located near the park’s center and has just about anything you need during your stay, including lots of Disney souvenirs.
Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground also has several unique activities for you while taking a break from the theme parks. For example, you can ride horseback, rent a canoe, and try your hand at archery.

The campground shows Disney movies nightly and has a large community campfire hosted by Chip and Dale.
Favorite Sites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
Choosing the best sites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground is problematic because it depends upon what you want to be near. The campground is so large that location is a significant factor in determining the best campsites.
One of our favorites is site 114; it is long enough for larger campers and has a lot of privacy. It is located near the Marina, so you can easily walk to get on the boat to the Magic Kingdom. It is only a short stroll to Pioneer Hall, home to the Trail’s End Restaurant, P and J’s Southern Takeout, and the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue.

For those who want to be close to the pool, sites on the 1400 loop are the perfect location. Our favorite is site 1435. This site places near Chip and Dale’s campfire and marshmallow roast, the outdoor theater, and the Meadows Trading Post.
Site 733 is a premium site between Pioneer Hall and the Meadows pool area. You can walk to all of the dining areas of Pioneer Hall in under 10 minutes or the opposite direction to the Meadows pool in about 10 minutes.
Description of Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
Disney’s Fort Wilderness is a vast campground located on 750 acres. There are 800 campsites and over 400 cabins on the property. The campsites are relatively close to each other, but Disney has done an excellent job of using various types of landscaping to provide more privacy. The sites are all on level concrete, making setup quick and easy. Some areas are more shaded than others.

One of the cool things about camping at Disney is that many people decorate their campsites. Most of the year, the sites are decorated with a Disney theme, but Halloween and Christmas are unique at the campground. The campground is decorated, as are many of the campsites.
Hookups at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground

All of the campsites have electrical hookups, water, and cable. Most of the campsites also have sewer hookups.
The sewer connection was different than anything I had ever seen before. It is in a little sink, so if there is any spillage, it will still drain into the sewer and not end up on the ground.
Discounts at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
Rates can vary at the campground depending on the time of year you visit. Prices are higher during Disney’s peak season, generally during the summer and holidays when schools are not in session. Campsites can be bundled with ticket packages to visit Disney parks.
Tips for Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
Transportation throughout the park is probably the trickiest obstacle that you will face. Depending on where you stay within the campground, you will probably be too far from some amenities to walk. Many people rent golf carts, but they are relatively expensive. We relied upon Disney Transportation to get from location to location within the campground, and it was fine, but you might have to wait 10-15 minutes for a bus. Next time we will bring our electric bikes (check out our article on camping with electric bikes) to help us get around the campground.

Things To Do Near Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
You are at Disney, so you are at the doorstep of everything that is Disney. We generally do not leave the Disney grounds while staying at Disney. However, if you want to explore the area, there is much to do, such as Universal Studios, Wet and Wild, and Legoland.
Fort Wilderness is close to the lovely community of Windermere, where they have a lot of excellent restaurants that will be more economical than eating at the park or in the campground.
Favorite Restaurants at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
There are several restaurant options located within the Fort Wilderness Campground. It is best to make reservations wherever you decide to eat.
We ate a couple of times at Trail’s End Restaurant. The Trail’s End Restaurant is in the campground near the boat launch to the Magic Kingdom. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Trail’s End has excellent food served family style. It is impossible to leave hungry because they will keep replenishing each item until you finish.
One night for dinner, enjoy the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue at Pioneer Hall. This is a dinner show full of good music and laughs. As you enjoy the show, you are served an all-you-can-eat dinner featuring fried chicken and BBQ pork ribs.

P and J’s Southern Takeout is next door to Trail’s End. They have delicious food you can pick up and return to your campsite. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. P and J’s Southern Takeout is also the perfect place to stop by and pick up a snack.
One of the things we love about camping is that it is an excellent way for a family to have fun and spend time together. Combine that with Disney World, the capital of family fun, and you cannot go wrong. We have stayed at several Disney resorts, but this was our favorite because of all the extra activities within the campground. We cannot recommend Fort Wilderness highly enough. Next time you go to Disney, skip the traditional resorts and stay at the campground.
